I Crossed an Ocean

Screenplay by: Courtney Fernández

When Casey Lee’s life was unexpectedly shattered by the loss of her husband, she never imagined how starting a new company with her best friends would lead her to find Taemin, an actor and singer who never knew that happiness was more than the successful career he leads. As their undeniable chemistry grows, they are blindsided by the realities of their respective worlds. The two take separate journeys, to find out what it takes to be whole as a person, so that they can be happy in love together.

“I Crossed an Ocean” is an original drama about two solitary figures - a widow film-maker and a young performer with the world at his feet - both have their mettle tested as they each look to define their “second-act” in life.

An early review of “I Crossed an Ocean” in the 2024 Big Break Screenwriting Contest said:

"I Crossed An Ocean” is an original take on the romance genre that elicits a ton of emotions… the project covers new narrative ground, along with the unique nature of the scenarios stemming from the locations and the cast's professions. As a result, the story stands out from its successful predecessors and current competitors within the category while offering something familiar yet different… The story will touch many because universal subject matters are touched upon as themes, including grief, love, friendship, heartbreak, family, and loneliness… topics that never fail to resonate as they do not require a specific trend, social climate, or an audience with a niche interest to be relatable.”

The story illustrates that time is irrelevant when you are with the right person. Empowering outside influences only take away from the freedom of the heart. While true love will always remain, the path you follow to get to happiness is only found when you give yourself a little bit of grace in life.

“I Crossed an Ocean” is more than a romance, it’s a story about human connections, and how the choices we make can sometimes break the lives we lead. The story is about two people who find out that sometimes you have to cross an ocean to find out that “home” is a choice only you can make. The story is written with the intent of giving western audiences greater exposure to current Korean talent and the Korean drama genre.
